Thornhill, Ontario straddles the border between the cities of Vaughan and Markham in the northern region of the Greater Toronto Area. Historic Yonge Street passes through Thornhill, and by following the road 20km (12 mi) south, travellers will find themselves right in the middle of all the action that downtown Toronto has to offer. Yonge Street has brought many people to Thornhill, and today the urban community is a diverse hub of activity with 49,000 residents and counting. While in Thornhill, do as the locals do by heading to the popular Promenade shopping mall, which features a wide variety of shops and services, over 175 in total. Those who would rather spend the day outdoors than surrounded by man-made commercial space can head to Uplands Avenue, where they'll find a ski hill in winter and a golf course in summer. Late summer also gives rise to the Thornhill Village Festival, an annual event that offers parades, historical re-enactments and more.
